Mission & History

Our Mission

The mission of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Partnership Fund, Inc. is to:

1) Support the unique learning opportunities, specialized curriculum and innovative research experiences available for TJ students and meet TJ’s unique needs as a premier public science and technology high school.

2) Provide opportunities for alumni to remain connected through engagement opportunities, including reunion support, regional events, outreach, and mentorship programs.

The Partnership Fund also supports TJ student groups that improve access to STEM education through their outreach functions and through events like HackTJ, Techstravaganza, and others.

As a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, we pursue our mission by engaging in partnerships with and soliciting private donations from corporations, parents, alumni, and friends of TJ in the STEM community who recognize TJ’s status as a leader in STEM education. In accordance with our founding documents, any grant request made to the PF must be directly tied to the educational programs of TJ. Grant requests made by outside organizations or other schools are generally not reviewed.

The PF is comprised of two full-time employees and a Board of current and past parents, alumni, and additional representatives. The PF is not affiliated directly with the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology or Fairfax County Public Schools, and employees of the PF are not employees of TJHSST or FCPS. The PF is independent of, and neither owned nor operated by, Fairfax County Public Schools.

The PF does not entertain grant requests from political causes or candidates. The PF has no role whatsoever in policymaking for or administration of TJHSST, to include its admissions process, development of its curriculum, or the selection of individuals to serve in its faculty, staff, or administration, nor has it ever had or sought such a role.

Our History

Established in 1985, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST or TJ) is a Virginia Governor’s School administered by Fairfax County Public Schools. As a selective secondary school, TJ serves over 2,000 students from the Northern Virginia jurisdictions of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties, and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.

TJ provides a dynamic, specialized learning environment for selected students with high ability, aptitude, and interest in mathematics, science and technology who seek a comprehensive, challenging curriculum with emphasis in these disciplines. Each year, a competitive admissions process attracts nearly 3,000 applicants for a class of 550 freshmen.

As the non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting TJ since 1999, the TJPF works closely with the school administration to help further its unique mission. The TJPF raises funds from current and past parents, alumni, corporations and foundations, and others who believe in the importance of the school’s role as a STEM education leader.

Since the merger of the TJ Alumni Association and the TJPF in 2014, the two organizations have combined forces. The TJPF’s staff reach alumni with the message of giving back to TJ, assist with reunion planning, host regional alumni networking events, and facilitate alumni participation in school and outreach activities.

In conjunction with the dramatic renovation of the School that began in June 2013, the TJPF launched the Campaign for TJ to raise funds for the infrastructure, state-of-the-art research equipment, and advanced technology that would not be covered by public funds but was critical to meet TJ’s unique needs and goals. The Campaign concluded in December 2017, exceeding its goal of raising $8 million to support the reimagining of TJ’s campus and facilities
